Paramount Pictures is hoping for a fourth success. The studio has confirmed it is working on Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and is targeting a spring 2027 theatrical release for the film. No details have been leaked about the plot, but the project will likely see actors Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey reprising their roles as Sonic and Dr. Robotnik.
Recent film adaptations of Sega’s famous game franchise have been consistent hits for Paramount. The first film achieved the biggest opening weekend in history for a video game movie, but it was surpassed by its own sequel in 2022. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which adds Keanu Reeves to the already star-studded cast of the series, releases tomorrow.
Variety is currently projecting the third entry to fall short of the financial bar set by Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but anything can happen. The films have also got a television spin-off on Paramount+ due to air next spring. The show will explore the backstory of Sonic’s echidna sidekick Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba.
Squid Game has set a new benchmark for Netflix’s television programming. Variety reported that the Korean show’s second season garnered 68 million views in its first four days. That’s the biggest debut for a TV show on the streaming platform, beating the 50.1 million views it had in 2022 as of Wednesday.
Squid Game’s first season also held the crown of the most-watched Netflix series for a while; 142 million households had watched it as of October 2021. The third and final season could score a hat-trick of record results for the company when it airs next year.
While the show offers a scathing critique of capitalism, Netflix is turning Squid Game into a great cash cow. The streamer launched a less lethal reality show spinoff, an in-person pop-up experience, and a multiplayer mobile game based on the TV series.
